The Romans called Scotland Caledonia, which means the edge of the world. The name still fits the feeling of Edinburgh. The grey cobbled streets match the buildings made of sandstone. Moisture and weather cause the stones to darken into a kaleidoscope of brown, black, and grey.

Everything is old and beautiful. The spire towers are dark and ominous, matching the dreary sky. The churches are grand and mysterious. I step out of the train station and it feels like I step into a different world, a world I have never seen before. A world truly on the edge of things.

I walk up Cockburn Street and turn left on High Street. I have a glance at Edinburgh Castle due west as I head east towards my hostel, Royal Mile Backpackers. The hostel is small and homey, with a warm fireplace in the common area. It’s a stark contrast from the hostel I stayed at in London. The staff are friendly and outgoing with great information regarding the surrounding area.

I spend the first afternoon watching the sunset from Edinburgh castle. The following day I’m up early to do a walking tour. As a huge Harry Potter fan it’s incredible to see how much inspiration came from this city. There’s Victoria Street, the basis for Diagon Alley. There’s George Heriot’s School, set up originally for orphaned children, the inspiration for Hogwarts. After the walking tour I eat lunch at the Elephant House, where JK Rowling first started writing about the boy who lived. There’s a great view of Edinburgh Castle and I spend some time journaling, encouraged by the atmosphere. The bathrooms are covered in Harry Potter quotes, which I spend far too much time reading. People from all around the world share their love and appreciation for a book series that touches millions. I find a small place to leave my mark as well.

After the toes warm up I’m out again, walking the streets. It’s amazing how much you can stumble upon. This city is beautiful and I’m so excited to explore more.
